There are two chess variants played on a 5x6 board that are good for kids, esp. when they are new to the game.
They are called "QuickChess" and "Chess Attack". Of the two only the former seems to still be available commercially, however it's easy to DIY, all you need to do is color print two pieces of paper and then laminate them together.
- Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Djbclark/KidsChess5x6 and select "Download as PDF" from the right-hand menu, and print the first page of that.
- Go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chessboard_5x6_green.svg and download either the SVG or a high-res version, and print that. Be sure to mess with print zoom settings and margins to get it as big as possible on your paper.
- Laminate the two together, add standard tournament pieces, a bit cramped but works!
